ZINTLE’S GAMBLE PAYS OFF!
WHEN designer Zintle Magwaza (23) started making clothes that resemble what initiates wear when they go to the mountain, she expected a lot of backlash.
But to her surprise, fashion lovers applauded her bravery.
“I’m inspired by Xhosa culture,” she said.
“Everything I do has to have a touch of my Xhosa roots. Last year I styled initiates.
“I understand that women aren’t supposed to know what happens on the mountain, but I still took the risk.”
She was expecting negative feedback.
“I expected people to say I’m exposing the black community. I thought they would say, ‘You’re supposed to know that this is our secret’.
“Instead, they said I have a lot of courage.
“I haven’t received a single negative comment about this.
“I did a lot of research in my kasi because I didn’t want to go only to fashion experts and people who live in town.”
She said some of the people she interviewed in her research included lecturers and designers.
Zintle said the blankets she designed are selling like hot cakes.
“My clients are young men who’re going to the mountain, but I have several designs that can accommodate everyone.
“In fact, some of my clients live abroad.”
